Blog

Out of Left Field brings you the popular and fringe culture podcast, 5282, concentrating on Music, Film and Television.
Each episode we explore a general topic such as 'Were The Beatles a folk band?', or discuss a particular creative, such as Annette Peacock. Once a month, we produce a recommendations episode containing material you may have heard of and much you've never come across. No remote region of creativity is overlooked as hosts Kevin Petch, Rob Wood, Phil Todd and David Benn explore culture through the 1950's to the early 1980's.
Plus everything after then.
And most of what happened back to... well, pretty much the end of the Younger Dryas.
Plus the occasional guest interview and performance.
We dedicate this page to William Astbury, who started this journey with us, but sadly passed away in 2024.

5282 Second Day of Christmas (2025)
For our second day of Christmas, Kevin interviews traditional folk multi instrumentalist duo The KImberleys. We recorded in the bar at Crank Studios, Morley, before they performed 'Christmas with The Kimberleys', supported by experimental folk harpist Lauren Moreau.
So there's lot's of 'atmosphere', but we did edit out the coffee machine.

FIRST EVER CHRISTMAS SINGLE RELEASED BY JON GOMM

FIRST EVER CHRISTMAS SINGLE RELEASED BY JON GOMM
Jon Gomm, the Blackpool-born acoustic guitar virtuoso, has released his first ever Christmas single. It’s his very own take on Shchedryk (Carol Of The Bells), a folk song originating in Ukraine, during the early part of the 20th century.

Jon Gomm
This is an instrumental version of the song, with the original lyrics telling of seeing the first swallow of the year, meaning winter must be nearly over and spring is coming. It’s a beautiful, ethereal reinterpretation, full of Gomm’s trademark guitar techniques, both hypnotic and dreamlike in equal measure. His playing, as always, is crystal clear and note perfect.

Shchedryk (Carol Of The Bells) by Jon Gomm
Jon says: “I reinterpreted the music a fair bit, so when I play it live I introduce it with a different title - Shchedryk v Hrad.
‘Hrad’ is the Ukrainian word for hail or hailstorm, so you can think of it as A Swallow In A Hailstorm. ‘Hrad’ is also the name the Russian army gave to their rocket-launcher tanks, which shoot a hailstorm of destruction, like those which totalled the apartment of my friend Serhii Radzetskyi and his family. This piece is dedicated to him, and my other Ukrainian friends Inna and Vlad, and all those that have suffered as a result of the war.”
Shchedryk (Carol Of The Bells) is out now and available to buy on Bandcamp, plus all the usual streaming sites and YouTube. See links below.

Christmas 2025 Trailer
Two attempts and we still got it wrong. Because this coming Christmas we have FIVE* (not four as Kevin says) bonus episodes. It's more or less a mini series, but not featuring Joan Collins or Richard Chamberlain.
On the 22nd, we have Christmas with The Kimberleys. Jim and Isobel are a folk duo and they are playing three gigs in December. Kevin will be interviewing them at their Morley Folk Club gig on 16th, details in link below.
Then on the 24th, 26th and 28th we will have a three part Dr Who feature, in which Kevin interviews Whovian Chris Hoyle.
We finish 2025 with our review of the year featuring Mel, Rob and Phil. (* Dave is already starting to think that it's going to be a two parter).
So thanks for supporting us and watch for these upcoming episodes.
Finally Dave would like to thank Andrew Hunter Murray for the gag.

70s Synth Albums and TONTO Synth
Who doesn't love a high pass filter? Gently applied to two detuned oscillators set at square wave?
If this is just word salad to you, then listen to our discussion on electronic music albums of the 1970s, where Kevin and David pick three each to illustrate the development and interest in synthesizers, not all of them are too obvious. And Kevin wanders off from the '1970 to 1979' brief.
In our second feature David admits his previous ignorance about The Original Neo Timbral Orchestra, an achievement up there with the discovery of the first pulsar (note the spelling).
We round off with a few honorable mentions.

October Recommendations
It's time for more recommendations, and if the multitrack recorder had not suffered some sort of end times malfunction we would have a longer episode for you.
Glitches in the Tascrix did not stop Kevin, Mel and Phil discussing music, documentaries and a long running YouTube series.
But the audio quality does reflect the transient nature of stability, the impermanence of reliability and most importantly the state of the preamps. Dave is trying to figure out if this can be fixed with WD40 or Gaffa tape.

No 5282 This Week
Hello. We are not publishing an episode this week, starting Sept 29th. This is because either
a. ABC got the jitters and temporarily suspended us.
b. The absence of The Rapture has made us reflect on the human condition.
c. Our multitrack packed in.
d. We are out Swan hunting.
Hopefully this week we will be reinstated / over it / repaired / dealing with an angry letter from King Charles III, and able to press on with our October recommendations.

5282 is an Out Of Left Field production, unless a multitrack has to be disassembled, then it's all down to Dave.

Beatles Documentaries
In 1969 director Michael Lindsay-Hogg has a straightforward task. To film the Beatles at Twickenham studios as they prepare for a live television performance, scheduled roughly for a few weeks in the future, and a new album. The band seem tense, under rehearsed and lacking direction. Within a month they have changed venue, direction, have added Billy Preston to their line up and have performed on the roof of the Apple Corps. headquarters.
Now we have both Lindsay-Hogg's edited version, Let It Be, and Peter Jackson's mammoth Get Back. The 5282 team discuss the relative merits of both, the range of emotions and struggles on show, and what more if anything we can learn about probably the most famous band in the world ever.

Produced by Kevin Petch for Out Of Left Field.

Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate
Published: Monday, August 25, 2025
We had a budget of unlimited tea and a box of custard tarts. Could we create the best podcast about Heaven's Gate, the 1980 cinema equivalent of the fall of Rome (allegedly)? Or is it four blokes arguing about Stetson versus Derby hats? The four regular hosts sit down to discuss this films place in cinema history, it's behind the scenes chaos and enduring on screen mysteries.

Jaws 50th Anniversary
Published: Monday, August 4, 2025
British listeners know there are better reasons than marauding sharks to not enter the water, but fifty years ago American cinema audiences suddenly found themselves planning holidays in the mountains (mountain lion fatalities rose 180% in 1976. A 5282 fact).
Kevin, Rob and Dave discuss the film and it's impact, and they did record a feature on the dawn of the summer blockbuster, which will now be episode 9.
Remember, sharks are like spiders, generally they are more scared of you than you are of them.
Apart from those that can easily kill you.
